Henry Andrews Paleobotanical Slide Collection

The Henry Andrews slide collection contains over 3,000 paleobotanical slides, comprising the work of Andrews and many of his graduate students. Material of 46 type specimens described by Andrews or his collaborators are currently documented in the collection and summarized below. This collection is not only important because of its intrinsic scientific value, but also it serves as a historical record of Andrew’s contribution to science throughout his long career.

Criteria for types:

A slide was listed as type material if 1) the slide was labeled with the word “type” and/or 2) Andrew’s original notebooks list the material as belonging to a type. The notebook typically listed the associated protologue. Some of the slide material is connected with the macrofossil collection and noted below.

Type notes

  1. While this is type material, the associated study is a comparative study. Andrew was not the one to describe the species.
  2. Species is not mentioned in protologue referenced in collection.
  3. This was later combined as Lepidodendron wilsonii, see: Evers, R. A. (1951). A new Lepidodendron from Illinois. American Journal of Botany, 38(9), 731–737. pdf
  4. Designation is unclear, but likely sp. nov.
